Planting 220 million trees - now that's what I'm talkin' about!

Image
It happened in India, in the state of Upper Pradesh. " More than a million Indians planted 220 million trees on Friday [Aug. 9, 2019] in a government campaign to tackle climate change and improve the environment in the country's most populous state." -  https://news.yahoo.com/indians-plant-220-million-trees-125759390.html And it was all in aid of improvement to the environment... If they can do it in India, why can't we do it here?

Amazon Rain Forest on Fire!

Image
They've called out the army to fight forest fires raging across Brazil, including the Amazon Basin, home to the world's largest continuous rainforest. Forest fires are burning in Bolivia and Peru as well. There are not nearly enough human resources to cope with a disaster of this magnitude, while debate still goes on concerning how and why it all started. The number of individual rainforest fires is said to be up over 80% in Brazil alone so far this year. This is the kind of disaster for the planet that only tree planting can reverse. Tree-lined roadways reduce travellers' stress

Image
There have been many studies showing the positive psychological properties of trees, and this is only one of the most recent. The conclusion arises from research done at the University of Florida by Professor Andrew Koeser. Trees, Koeser has discovered, "enhance the experience of both tourists and residents as they drive to their destinations.” Trees bring both beauty and stress relief to the roadside. National Tree Day! - September 17

Image
What could be more natural than, smack-dab in the middle of National Forest Week, the designation of National Tree Day? Most trees, like this fine specimen of Horse Chestnut, are still in their full summer glory. But we won't have to wait long now for the Fall colours to arrive. National Tree Day is being supported and publicized by Tree Canada. Their suggestions for ways to celebrate include: volunteer, plan an event, plant a tree, donate, shop green, and tell your story. Climate change - the defining challenge of our time!

Image
There have just been two recent reports released on the global climate crisis. One was by the IPCC, a UN body that has published such reports every few years since... There was another one, however, this time from the World Meteorological Organization, and this one is worth a second look. It's called 'United in Science.' Maybe the biggest story here is, 'CLIMATE IMPACTS,' hitting harder and sooner than predicted a decade ago. This means that glaciers are melting faster and sea levels are rising faster than we had thought. And rising sea levels imperil millions of lives and livelihoods in coastal regions of  the world's continents and islands. Trees that can fight the climate crisis are going to be more important than ever in our future. One city losing trees at the rate of 5,000 per year

Image
Officials in Wichita, Kansas, are concerned. The city's tree canopy is disappearing at an alarming rate. Only 23% of their land is covered by tree canopy and that number is trending downward.  Summer drought seems to be the biggest factor in the decline. If that's the situation in Wichita, what is it like in other major North American cities?

Finding benefits of $1.50–$3.00 for every dollar invested in trees

Image
This is real estate talk. In southern California, they're big on the benefits of trees. There are the environmental benefits of course - protection of soil from erosion, providing habitat for birds, contributing oxygen to the atmosphere... and it's a much longer list than this. But in addition they provide a whole lot of services that people value. For example, trees in your neighbourhood reduce energy use, reduce water run-off to sewage systems and improve air and water quality (also a much longer list). What really appeals to those with a stake in real estate, is the way trees add to the value of a house that is up for sale. One expert calculates that investing in trees on a residential property can produce a 110% return on investment.
